Matzoh bread is a flat bread that is not allowed to rise during baking so that it remains thin and crispy when served. Making homemade Matzoh bread is used to substitute bread during Passover. During this Jewish holiday breads and other leavened foods are forbidden as part of the faith. To prepare for a successful Seder meal, follow these steps to make homemade Matzoh bread.
- Gather ingredients. The makings of Matzoh are reasonably simple. All you need is 2 cups of Kosher all-purpose flour, 1 cup of Kosher whole wheat flour and 1 cup of spring water. The tools you will need are a baking sheet, parchment paper, measuring cups, large bowl, fork and rolling pin.
- Clean your kitchen. Making Matzoh bread for Passover requires that your kitchen be cleaned. Following the procedures of your faith clean all the surfaces in your kitchen then clean the oven. Make sure to clean all the surfaces as well as the oven racks. You can use the self-cleaning function on your oven if it has one.
- Preheat the oven. The oven should be set to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Prepare the baking sheet. Place parchment paper onto the baking sheet.
- Mix ingredients. Mix both types of flour, a total of three cups, together in the large bowl. Slowly add the water and stir until you have a soft dough. Most often you should need one cup of water but depending upon your climate, you may need a tablespoon or two more or less.
- Knead the dough. The dough should be kneaded for approximately five minutes. Once the dough has been kneaded, let it stand or rest for a few more minutes.
- Pull off sections of dough. Pinch and pull of sections approximately the size of an egg or a golf ball. Stretch the sections to create a thin oval shaped piece. Then use the rolling pin to roll the dough into very thin ovals. Repeat until you have several sections of oval shaped dough.
- Place each flat piece onto the baking sheet. After you place the dough, prick each piece with a fork. These thin ovals are Matzohs. Place the sheets into the oven.
- Bake the Matzohs. The pieces should become crispy and buckled after about three to four minutes.
- Cool and serve. Remove the baked bread pieces from the oven and set out to cool. The Matzoh is ready to eat once it is cool.
