No matter what we do, hair always has the tendency to break. That is just the way hair behaves and reacts to stress, poor diet and more especially, from the products that we use like strong shampoos, hair dryers and even conditioners. However, saving your crowning glory need not be as expensive and extensive as you think. Here are ways that can help you in saving your hair from breakage.
Minimize the use of heating instruments on your hair, such as a blow dryers and curling irons. Though heat helps hair to hold a style, the heat also causes the hair ends to split. The incessant attack of heat on the hair, complicated by strong perming and rebonding chemicals, will result in damage that can sometimes take weeks or months to rehabilitate. Thus, minimize or eliminate use of these heating instruments as much as possible.
Use protein treatments when the hair is severely damaged. It’s like fighting fire with fire. If rebonding or perming chemicals have caused the damage, then there are also chemicals that bring back the luster in your hair. Make sure that you consult with your hair care specialist as to how often you will need to use protein treatments. For damaged hair, protein treatments should be used two to three times a month, but no more. For lesser degrees of damage, fewer treatments in a month are needed, until your hair is nursed back to its bouncy and full-bodied self.
Be more selective when buying shampoos. Sure, all shampoos tell you they clean your hair and make it smell nice, too, but what they don’t tell you is that shampoos also use sulfates at that can do more harm the good. Do not buy shampoos that have the following:
- Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
- TEA Laureth Sulfate
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
However, shampoos that contain the following sulfates are safe and beneficial to hair:
- Polyoxethylene Fatty Alcohols
- PEG 80
- Sorbitan Laurate
- Decyl Polyglucose
- Cocamidopropyl Betaine
- Sodium Myreth Sulfate
Put up your hair at night. If you have styled your hair for an important event, make sure you put up your hair for the night so as not to disrupt the styling. Even if you haven’t gone to the parlor that day, it still a practical move to put up your hair to prevent it from getting in contact with fabrics on the bed, such as wool. After putting up your hair, protect it further by wrapping it with a satin scarf or anything smooth.
Cut the split ends. Breakage begins from the ends to the root of the hair and for to prevent the break from developing into the root, cut or trim the ends. This does not even involve expensive treatments or salon time. Just be mindful of your hair and check the tips as often as you can. The earliest signs of breakage or splitting should prompt you to go for the scissors and start snipping the split ends. For most people, this kind of vigilance does the trick.
Again, preventing or treating hair breakage does not always require expensive trips to the salon. Sometimes you just need to be mindful of the shampoo that you use, and the chemicals that you apply.
