Telecommunications companies normally lock certain features of Nokia cell phones they sell to their customers. The reason for this is that they want to make sure that their clients only use their respective networks. Some may think that changing their Nokia cell phone’s Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card will already allow them to use other telecommunications networks. Unfortunately this is not the case. Some end up paying to have their Nokia cell phones unlocked when in truth it can be done in no time.
- Call your service provider. The very first thing that you should do is to inquire for an unlock code for your Nokia cell phone from your service provider. In most cases, this is provided for free especially if you have been their loyal customer for some time.
- Get the code yourself. Telecommunications companies lock Nokia cell phones so SIM cards of other networks will not work. So if calling your service provider yields no results, then you can always search through the Web for a software that can generate an unlock code. In most cases, the software comes with an unlock code calculator that will provide you with seven generated unlock codes.
- Get the IMEI number. The IMEI number is your Nokia cell phone’s hardware serial number. This is typically written inside the unit underneath the battery. If you cannot find this on the unit, you can type in *#06# on your cell phone and this step will automatically retrieve the IMEI number for you.
- Get the SIM out and do the unlocking. With the use of the unlocking software you have downloaded, enter Nokia as the Manufacturer. Afterwards, get the SIM by sliding it carefully out of the phone. Replace the battery and turn your Nokia cell phone on again. The message Insert SIM Card will appear. Type in all the characters included in the unlock code and make sure to disregard spaces if there are any. Press * three times so you can get a p. Press * twice to get +. Finally, press * four times to get a w. Once successful, the message Restriction off or SIM is not restricted should appear. Afterwards, turn off your phone. Hold down keys 3 and Call and turn on the unit once more. Continue to hold these two buttons down until Formatting… appears on the screen to finally reset and remove the lock code.
Bear in mind that unlocking your Nokia cell phone may be used by your service provider as grounds to void your warranty.
