The fuel filter is one of the cheaper engine components, costing around $20. Its benefit, however, is very significant as it can protect your engine from damages that could cost you hundreds of dollars. Even the tiniest dirt particles and sediments can clog up your fuel injection system or carburetor. It is important to note that the fuel filter should be replaced once a year. Luckily, it is very inexpensive and the process is quite simple. For the Nissan Altima, the fuel filter is part of the car’s fuel pump assembly. This article will guide you in removing the old fuel filter and installing a brand new fuel pump assembly.
- Prepare all the equipment and supplies that you are going to need. You will need a set of screwdrivers and a wrench. You will also need to go to the Nissan dealership and inquire if their shop carries a fuel pump assembly that you can purchase. Ask them also to supply you with a correct-sized O-ring. You will also need a pair of goggles or any form of protective eye gear.
- Follow some safety precaution steps before doing anything. If you have been using your car, it is advisable to let the engine cool off first; otherwise, you can suffer from severe burns. Once the engine is sufficiently cool, your next step will be to release the pressure in the fuel system. Failing to do this could cause the fuel lines to explode. Before doing this, you will need to put on your protective eye gear. This is to shield your eyes from any fuel leaks that could spurt out once you begin changing the filter. Start the car’s engine and then take out the fuse of your fuel pump. If you pulled out the correct fuse, the engine will immediately stall. Disengage the battery cable from the negative terminal to avoid any incidence of electrocution.
- Disengage the fuel lines from the pump assembly. Remove the back seat and the car’s access cover. Disconnect the electrical connectors of the fuel pump. Disengage the fuel lines from the car’s fuel pump assembly as well. Using a wrench, turn the locking ring counter clockwise until it is unfastened. Unscrew the mounting tabs that are holding the assembly in place. You can now lift up the entire fuel gauge assembly. Remove any tube, connectors, and O-ring from the gauge.
- Put in the replacement fuel pump. Installing the replacement pump assembly is just the opposite of the removal process. Do not forget to use a brand new O-ring. Hook up all the electrical connections. Connect also the fuel tube to the sending unit of the vehicle’s fuel gauge. Tighten the retaining screws with a wrench. Avoid applying too much pressure to prevent damaging the threads of your screws.
Once the new fuel pump assembly is in place, you can reconnect the car’s
fuel lines and slot back the fuse. Reconnect the battery cable and turn
on the ignition. Check all the parts that you touched for any leaks and
conduct repairs as needed. When all the leaks have been addressed, put
back the cover and the back seats.
