If you are in Sydney, going to the Opera House should be at the top of your list. The Opera House was designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, and is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Australia. It’s the landmark that is often most pictured when we think of or read about Sydney.
Tours of the Opera House are available to those who wish to learn more of its history.
- “The Essential Tour” runs about an hour long, and guides visitors through the architectural and engineering side of the Opera House. A picture of you in the Opera House is included with this tour.
- The “Asian Spotlight Tours” are shortened versions of the Essential Tour, offered in simplified and traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.
- The “Backstage Tour” explores the Opera House intimately for two hours, guiding visitors through the backstage areas, including a full breakfast in the Green Room (the Green Room, however, is not open on Sundays or public holidays).
The Opera House offers two show package deals – the Gold and the Silver packages. Each package includes a two-course pre-theatre meal per person, two drinks per person at show intermission, and your choice of the Essential Tour ticket voucher or a parking voucher. The difference between the Gold Show Plus package and the Silver Show Plus package is the restaurant where you have your meal. The Silver Show Plus package is about $20.00 less than the Gold Show Plus package.
There are plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from when visiting the Opera House, including Guillaume at Bennelong (where you can book High Tea), the Opera Bar, the Sidewalk Café, and the Bistro Mozart.
Shopping is also an option at the Opera House. Enjoy a wide variety of products at the Sydney Opera House Shop, or shop at Purely Australian Clothing Co., Barrington’s, or the Sydney Opera House Market (open on Sundays and Public Holidays).
And of course, no visit to the Sydney Opera House is complete until you have gone to a performance. Choose from a variety of shows including classical music, opera, dance, popular music, and theatre. The acoustics are so stunning in the Sydney Opera House that you cannot be disappointed no matter where you are sitting. It may be a good idea to plan ahead when choosing a show by researching performances online ahead of time. Some shows offer online ticket purchasing.
