When using a retractable dog leash, it’s always important to know how exactly it works. With all different types of leashes out there today, leashes with the retractable feature provide an easily accessible device for walking your dog. Whether the leash is expensive and fancy or cheaper and basic, knowing how to use one is key.
First, make sure the dog is attached to the clip part of the leash. Secure the clip to the ring (usually where the dog tags are) on the dog’s collar, and allow the dog to walk a comfortable distance. Usually the leash has a lock feature or a button you can hold down to keep the leash from continuing a long distance; it’s up to you whether you want to keep the dog at a permanent distance of if you’d like to keep it temporary. If you’re comfortable with the dog’s distance and decide that you want to keep it at that length, and then secure the lock feature on the leash. Usually it’s a button that slides either up or down to lock the leash in place. If you so choose to keep the dog at whatever distance it chooses, then hold down the temporary button that allows the leash to stop until you release. This will keep the dog from wandering too far and when you’re ready for the dog to go further, you can release the button.
In using a retractable dog leash, it’s also important to know how to get the dog to come back as well. When you want to let the dog come back, either unlocks the lock feature or release the temporary hold button. Make sure the dog comes straight back to you, and if you want the dog to walk at a closer distance then call the dog closer and then lock the leash. A word of advice when using a retractable dog leash is that it’s not a toy, and shouldn’t be used by small children who may not be aware of how it works. Do not play with the leash and continuously lock and unlock it in small amounts of time, because the leash will yank at the dog’s collar and potentially choke the dog. It could also frighten the dog, which could make it run away and possibly drag you along with it. For the safety of you and the dog, follow these instructions and enjoy your walk!
